I have to say that I see merit in both points.
People of all ethnicities, occupations, etc. will throw in other ethnic demographics when describing themselves.
However, I have seen in Asian, Black, and Latino cultures that there is a predisposition for many in these groups to want to to accentuate Euro-centric standards of beauty and culture.
It is evident in the media from Bollywood with the lighter complected Indian actors being predominant, Telemundo - Univision and other Latino media outlets favoring those with European features, Asians around the world walking around with umbrellas lest they darken, skin lightening creams, hair straightening products sold to African-Americans, and countless other instances.
I must contend that these continue to be the vestiages of colonialism, and that we live in a
