Good question, to which the answer is both. In the similar vein of my switching from banks to credit unions years ago, I also found Newsgroups to be better (for me) than p2p sites. They are similar and yet different in key ways. I find torrents (p2p) to be not worth the risk of exposure to viruses. I value my electronic devices and don't want viruses anywhere near them. While the risk is still there with Newsgroups, it's not nearly as bad, in my opinion. To the point that, I've been using Newsgroups for around 5 years now, and have yet to ever have a virus.

Many ISP, use to offer some basic free access to Newsgroups. I'm a Cox subscriber and can say their East Coast operations recently shut down the free service. This didn't factor for me at all, as I actually pay a monthly fee for my access to Newsgroups. That does settle my 'moral' issues with the content I'm 'picking up from the ether'. Also, when I was introduced to Newsgroups it was described as digital trash bin. If you throw away a dvd and someone else picks it up and watches, that's not stealing, it's recycling. These studios couldn't charge you with piracy cause you aren't giving it away to anyone specifically (like with p2p), you are just, putting it out there.
