    SOPA is Steal Society... Freedoms

First, I'm posting this here in the main forum even though it is more inline with my Ramblings thread as that thread doesn't get many varied comments despite the overwhelming amount of views it holds.

SOPA Stop Online Privacy Act is a bill being put forth by the MPAA and RIAA to impose their will upon the World Wide Web. Basically any site that a copyright/trademark holder 'thinks' (no proof required) is infringing on their IP (Intellectual Property) in any small way, will have their domain taken down, and any other business associated with can also be negatively effected. While this may be great for Corporations and smaller companies, it will surely undermine what the internet was created for, and drive our country even closer to being ran totally by Big Corp instead of a nation for the people. In short, America as a society is not far from being a draconian state which will require the likes of Guy Fawkes to help remedy. Why must the powers that be try to corrupt everything that I hold dear? Fuq this, I'm moving to Japan. I suppose I could just improve on my hacking skills...

Before I take my leave, pray tell Ms. Remy where one might go to speak out against such an atrocious assault against my freedoms?

from what i understand it would be a tough sell to have that act apply to all non US based servers and ISPs, the EU has some pretty stiff privacy laws that im sure would put up a fight against anything like that..i remember a while back there was a big push to try to apply taxes to the internet..the most this act would end up doing is causing domain owners to relocate to other servers and ISPs that dont support it, then we'd probably see some of the more mainstream US based ISPs preventing their customers from accessing ip addresses/domains of "known" or "suspected" infringing sites..ive seen many file sites doing a decent job of self regulating the data stored on their servers..i've seen enough in the computer and gaming world to know that the more ways they find to strongarm the internet as we know it- the more people will find and create loopholes to get around it.

They actually touch on that aspect in the article stating that "...In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates."

    Cool

    This is sad news...

I am probably the least tech-knowledgeable guy here, but as sure as eggs are eggs the powers that be WILL take control of the web... Right now we are still in the Wild Frontier stage, where people can just enjoy it as it is, but this will change over the coming years...

I would advise young people of the West, who seem to enjoy the illusion of our freedoms as if they drop from the sky, to enjoy the phenonomen of the www as much as possible over the next few years, because access to it will become stringently controlled, and probably sooner than we think.

Like your youth, enjoy it while it lasts!...

And maybe reflect on the fact that while this Western culture seems to have some deranged Orwellian desire to control x, y, and z....... At least we are free to be born female without being held down and having our clitoris sliced off, then sold/married off at the age of 11 to a man old enough to be your grandad (who already has 4 wives), then buried up to your waist and stoned to death for "adultery" etc etc etc

The inevitable state/corp control of the www is a downright shame, and to a degree worht fighting for, but we mustn't rely on any one source for our knowledge/inspiration.

    Lounge against the Machine,

    SHAUN
